Links to news of Ray Hubbard and its lakeside communities

Rowlett officials’ dreams of lakeside frontage along Interstate 30 didn’t die when Dallas voters declined to take Elgin B. Robertson Park off its list of parks in November, they just were put off until the next election. The story about Rowlett’s hopes for the land that for now is a park can be found on our NeighborsGo site.

Eleven Rockwall schools and a couple in Rowlett are participating in the Watch DOGS program. Texas leads the way in the program, an initiative for fathers to get involved in their kids’ education and campus. The link to the story by Julieta Chiquillo and Danielle Abril can be found here.

Also this week, we’re posting a story about Rowlett resident Brittany Griffin, who signed to be Rockwall Christian Academy’s first girls basketballer to play at the college level.

Season of giving continues in Rockwall

rockwall coat drive.JPGA few examples show that Rockwall has moved on from the “lighting” to the “giving” part of the holiday season:

Rockwall County Helping Hands is planning to distribute toys to 1,200 needy children this Saturday, but the nonprofit is running short of its goal heading into Friday, the last day to collect toys. Here’s a story and contact list from our NeighborsGo staff.

Tuesday, the Rockwall Breakfast Rotary Club made a trip to deliver more than 200 new coats to students (pictured). Members expanded the annual coat delivery to include all 12 Rockwall ISD elementary campuses this year.

Those dozen campuses were also the beneficiary of a donation of 350 boxes of books from Half Price Books. The donation was arranged by Rockwall resident Stan Haddock, a volunteer Book Exchange of Dallas volunteer. The effort culminated with a visit from Congressman Ralph Hall to help Dobbs Elementary celebrate the arrival of its books.

‘Rockwall Then and Now’ prints are now available

rockwall print.JPGThe Dr. Gene Burton Endowment Fund is benefiting from the sale of prints of “Rockwall Then and Now,” a photographic collage of still-life images that depict Rockwall’s history and growth.

“Rockwall Then and Now,” by Richard Sturdevant, debuted at the Rockwall ISD Education Foundation Celebration last February at Southfork Ranch. It was purchased there by Kim and Calvin Wallen (Kim Wallen is pictured here with Burton, the school district’s recently retired superintendent).

Titled, numbered and signed limited edition prints of the original canvas work are now available through the Education Foundation for $100. Call 469-698-7094 or e-mail.

Rockwall teacher on dream trip with Oprah

Tosha Ridgeway.jpgRockwall High School teacher Tosha Ridgeway is getting an early Christmas present — she’s touring Australia with Oprah Winfrey.

Tosha, an English teacher, volleyball coach and ultimate Oprah fan, was in the audience for Oprah’s first show of her last season when the talk show host announced the whole group would be going to Australia.

That 8-day trip started this week and so far has been a success.

Just getting there with Oprah makes it a hit with Tosha.

Rowlett’s newest playground built in a day

Rowlett playground 7.jpegBack in October I wrote a story about a company called Kaboom!, a nonprofit, that asked Rowlett kids to come share their ideas for the perfect playground. Those ideas were incorporated by playground designers into three possibilities for a new playground.

This past Saturday about 200 community volunteers and 100 volunteers from Foresters insurance gathered at Kenwood Heights Park (formerly Wedgewood Park) to make those plans a reality.

In a single day, volunteers built a 3,200 square foot playground that will serve nearly 14,000 children and their families. They used 12,000 lbs of concrete, 64,800 square feet of safety surfacing and more than 100 rakes, wheelbarrows, shovels and other tools.

Rowlett’s playground is one of 20 nationwide funded by Foresters this year.

Rockwall police offer holiday safety patrols and tips

I’ve been posting often about the many events in the area to officially kick off the holiday and shopping seasons. So here’s a reminder to play it safe.

Rockwall police are increasing patrol along the Interstate-30 corridor by assigning additional officers to retail parking lots. The annual effort is formally called the Holiday Initiative Program.

Chief Mark Moeller reminds everyone to take a few precautions, such as:

  • Don’t leave your keys in the vehicle;
  • Lock vehicle doors; and
  • Hide valuable items such as GPS devices, cellphones and packages.
